Acne is a nightmare for many teenagers who, in order to get rid of the problem, will resort to a variety of remedies, including steroids and antibiotics, and spend considerable amount of money. They often forget that herbs also can be helpful is this case.
Herbs can also be used in hair care and have a positive effect on the condition of nails.
Skin, but not only...
Viola tricolor (heartsease) is used, for example, for the treatment of acne. Most often it comes in the form of an infusion drink. Viola has a detoxifying effect – it increases urine excretion, which helps to remove the harmful products of the metabolism. It also has a diuretic effect. The raw material contains the dried, flowering, above-ground parts of the plant. It is available in the form of express bags for brewing. Viola is also added to herb mixtures for acne skin, which also include other plants which purify the body – nettle, horsetail and camomile.
Nettle is sometimes called the Polish ginseng. It has a mildly diuretic effect and helps to remove metabolic waste products. It is a valuable source of vitamins and minerals, the deficiency of which can interfere with the metabolic processes. It contains, among other things, silicates, thanks to which, when used externally, nettle extracts have a positive effect on the condition of nails and hair, and, internally, stimulate hair cells and have anti-perspirant and anti-seborrhoeic properties.
Horsetail also includes silicone compounds. Similarly to viola, it increases urine excretion and purifies the body. It also has a positive effect on the condition of hair, skin and nails.
Camomile has anti-inflammatory and disinfecting effects. Externally, it is used for skin inflammation. A camomile brew helps to bring back the natural hair colour and prevents hair loss. Camomile is used in various cosmetics - soaps, shampoos, creams etc.
One of the most popular plants used in the cosmetic industry is witch-hazel, which has astringent and soothing properties. It shrinks the pores and removes excess sebum secreted by the skin. Extracts of witch-hazel are one of the ingredients of creams, toners and face masks.
Another commonly used plant in anti-acne cosmetics is lavender, which has antiseptic and disinfectant properties.
Herbal extracts, for example from marigold and arnica, are also used in the production of ointments used for the treatment of mild inflammations of the skin.
Secondly, hair
Calamus can also be used in hair care - it has astringent, anti-inflammatory and anti-dandruff properties.
Nettle, which dries the scalp, is another ingredient of shampoos. It has a positive effect in the case of dandruff and seborrhea and prevents going gray and hair loss.
To revive hair, and also for dandruff and seborrhea, we can also use burdock. It can be used externally for skin diseases such as acne.
Black turnip can be also, among other things, another ingredient of shampoos, as it deeply nourishes and strengthens the hair roots and prevents hair loss.
One of the plants used to produce herbal shampoos is common soapwort, which has a washing and foaming properties. It’s one of the ingredients of care products for oily skin. Other common plants used for care include birch, hops and sage.
Walnut, which darkens the hair, can also be helpful in hair care. Because of its colouring properties, it is also used for the production of creams and tanning oils.
